How to Find The Right Yoga Mat

Finding your way through the jungle of yoga mats is no easy task. Buying it online is particularly difficult, as you would of course like to feel a mat under your hands before you decide to buy it. So here are a few tips to make your decision easier.

The most important questions when buying a yoga mat

Before you decide on a yoga mat, I recommend that you first answer the following questions:

  • Where  do I want to do yoga?  If you want to take your mat with you on trips or often take it with you to the studio, weight and portability are of course crucial. For home, you can choose a thicker mat with better cushioning.
  • What form of yoga do I practice?  If more dynamic forms like power yoga or vinyasa yoga are your thing, the slip resistance of the mat is an important consideration. If you practice more Yin Yoga, you should look for more comfort than a thicker mat.
  • Which material should it be?  The selection is huge and ranges from simple rubber to new wool. It is important that your mat gives you a secure footing. Of course, environmentally friendly and people-friendly production conditions should also be an important criterion.
  • How big does my yoga mat have to be?  The perfect size of the yoga mat depends on your height. Calculate your height plus 15 cm. Standard mats are usually 180 cm long. If you are taller than 180 cm, you should pay attention to the oversize yoga mat.
  • How much money am I willing to spend ?

1. Lotuscrafts yoga mats

The Lotuscrafts label is my absolute favorite brand and is based in Austria. Thanks to the great price-performance ratio, the company has also achieved a market-leading position in Germany. Lotuscrafts offers different models, so there is something for every budget.

The entry-level model is lightweight and has a non-slip surface. Highly Recommended!

A slightly heavier, but super non-slip extra wide mat. Especially if you practice mostly at home, I recommend this more comfortable model.

This yoga mat made of EVA foam for high cushioning is 100% CO2 neutral. In olive and dusky pink – incredibly beautiful colors!

2. Jade Yoga Mats

The yoga mats from the US label JadeYoga are, alongside Manduka, among the most popular mats in the world. The company produces eco-friendly yoga mats made from natural materials.

Thanks to its very good cushioning and padding, the Jade Harmony yoga mat is ideal if comfort is very important to you during your yoga practice. It is the heaviest of the Jade yoga mats at 3.5 kg.

The right accessories: blocks and meditation cushions

I definitely recommend the right yoga accessories for your relaxed yoga practice at home. In this way you ensure that you can adopt a healthy and upright posture in every yoga exercise.

Cork yoga blocks are a particularly pleasant and sustainable material. You should always buy a set of 2 yoga blocks. I recommend you this set from Lotuscrafts :

yoga cushion is not only suitable for starting a yoga session in a seated position, but also as a bolster in Yin Yoga. Important tip: You can remove filling material from this pillow until the pillow becomes softer and more comfortable for you. My personal favourite: the “Zafu” cushion from Lotuscrafts .
